No. 6/5 Orange Offense Keeps Rolling in 24-4 Win Against Connecticut

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 6/5 Syracuse women’s lacrosse team recorded its fifth straight win, defeating Connecticut, 24-4 in front of 542 fans in the Carrier Dome on March 22. The Orange (7-1, 2-0) tied the school record for goals in a game, a record it set in its season opener against Canisius, and scored 20 or more goals for the sixth time this season.
As it has in its previous six games, the Orange scored first on Jackie DePetris’ goal at the 26:16 mark. Christina Dove and Halley Quillinan added goals to give Syracuse a 3-0 lead with 19:12 remaining. Connecticut (0-7, 0-2) responded with two-consecutive scores to cut the lead to one with 15:18 on the clock. Dove scored again at the 12:12 mark, sparking an 11-0 scoring run that gave the Orange a 14-2 lead with 34 seconds left in the half. Each team found the back of the net in the final 25 seconds as Syracuse held a 15-3 advantage at intermission. Quillinan had four goals in the half, while Dove and DePetris had hat tricks as the Orange recorded its highest goal output in a half this season.
Syracuse continued to build its lead in the second half. Katie Rowan scored 3:20 into the half as the Orange reeled off seven straight goals to take a 22-3 lead with 12:16 remaining. Connecticut scored its only goal of the second half when Whitney Michele found the back of the net at the 11:14 mark. The Orange wasn’t finished scoring as DePetris notched her fourth goal of the game and Eileen Finn recorded her first goal of the year to give Syracuse a 24-4 victory.
Several Orange either set or tied career highs in the game. DePetris finished with a career-best four goals, while Dove tied her career high with seven points (5 g, 2 a). Rowan had a hat trick in addition to tying her career high with four assists. Overall, seven players scored multiple goals, including Quillinan (five), Elise Terracciano (three), Kristin Brady (three) and Awehiyo Thomas (two). Whitney led Connecticut with two goals.
While the offense was clicking, Syracuse’s defense limited Connecticut to 16 shots on goal, including just three in the second half. The Orange held a 17-12 advantage in draw controls, while Connecticut picked up 14 ground balls to 12 for SU. Syracuse goalkeeper Liz Hogan recorded five saves, while the Huskies’ Jenna Moulton had 13.
Syracuse will be back in action on Monday when it hosts three-time defending national champion and the current No. 1-ranked Northwestern Wildcats at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Admission to the game is free.
